Prvním velkým podnikem nezávislých studentů se měla stát vzpomínková demonstrace u příležitosti 60. výročí 17. listopadu 1939, dne, kdy nacističtí okupanti zasáhli proti českým vysokým školám. Aby se nedostali hned od samého začátku do rozporu se zákonem, obrátili se s nabídkou spolupráce na městskou vysokoškolskou radu SSM (Socialistický svaz mládeže) v Praze.
Výsledkem jednání byla dohoda, podle níž se demonstrace mohla konat a nezávislí studenti na ní směli pronést projevy. Museli se ale zavázat, že se studentský průvod vyhne středu města.
Povolená cesta směřovala z Albertova na Vyšehrad k hrobu Karla Hynka Máchy, kde se měli účastníci rozejít. Plán nakonec schválil také Městský výbor KSČ (Komunistická Strana Česko-
slovenská) v Praze, který ovšem přesto nechal vyhlásit pohotovost pražské policie. O bezradnosti komunistů v této době nejvíce vypovídá skutečnost, že uložili ministru vnitra, aby oddíly SNB (Sbor Národní Bezpečnosti) zabránily studentům v přístupu do středu města, že však proti nim nesmí zasáhnout silou!
Na Albertov se dostavilo nečekaně velké množství mladých lidí. Přestože připravovatelé shromáždění neplánovali 17. listopad jako střetnutí s režimem, řadoví účastníci smýšleli jinak.
Nad hlavami nesli nápisy Zrušte KSČ, Zrušte StB, Nechceme vládu jedné strany, Chceme jinou vládu, Svobodnou republiku ve svobodné Evropě atd. Ty musely být připraveny předem, demonstranti si je přinesli již z domu.
Organizátoři demonstrace se snažili dodržet slovo a odvrátit ostatní od pochodu do středu města. Stáli napříč ulicí, přesvědčovali jednoho vedle druhého, aby zamířili na Vyšehrad a skutečně se jim to podařilo. Ale lidé toho pořád neměli dost. Na Vyšehradě neskončili, naopak se obrátili a průvod asi 50 000 účastníků táhl po vltavském nábřeží k Národnímu divadlu. Tam již
všude stály policejní jednotky v plné zbroji, v helmách, s laminátovými štíty, připraveny proti lidem zasáhnout. Ti vycítili nebezpečí, které hrozilo, a proto začali skandovat své úmysly: Z Václaváku domů a také Máme holé ruce! U Národního divadla průvod zahnul na Národní třídu, kde mu však po pár desítkách metrů zahradily cestu pořádkové oddíly. V okamžiku kdy průvod opustil Vyšehrad, ztratila demonstrace povolený ráz. Komunistické vedení muselo urychleně rozhodnout, co dělat: situace na Národní třídě se stala výbušnou. Právě zde bylo poslední místo, kde bylo možno studentům zamezit v proniknutí na Václavské náměstí, neboť to byl zásadní požadavek vedoucích činitelů KSČ. Atmosféra byla napjatá k prasknutí - studenti a policisté zde proti sobě stáli jistě hodinu, jedni skryti za štíty z umělé hmoty s obušky v ruce, druzí bezbranní, zpívající různé písně, v rukou nanejvýš květiny či hořící svíčky.
Nakonec policie dvěma proudy sevřela na Národní třídě asi 2000 lidí, kteří teď nemohli dopředu ani dozadu a pustila se do nich. Ozbrojenci opět postupovali s nepochopitelnou surovostí a brutalitou, do bezbranných studentů dokonce najížděl obrněný transportér. Během krátké doby se podařilo dav rozptýlit, na chodnících zůstávali pouze zranění jednotlivci a uprostřed ulice leželo nehybné tělo. Všichni si mysleli, že šlo o mrtvého studenta. Teprve později se ukázalo, že se jednalo o policejní provokaci a na zemi ležel jeden ze spolupracovníků tajné policie, předstírající smrt. Jaký to mělo mít smysl, se nepodařilo zjistit dodneška...
Přestože policie studentskou demonstraci na Národní třídě v Praze rozehnala, znamenal 17.listopad 1989 začátek nového bouřlivého vývoje.
